Whoever is Without Sin

    .
    I simply adore this painting.
    .
I have many favorite stories in God's word but I reallly love and admire the way that Y'shua handled the "righteous" men who thought they were doing "a good thing" by dragging this adulteress before Y'shua Jesus.  I imagine the scene, a reverent quiet afternoon in the courtyard of the temple as men gathered to worship YHVH.  Perhaps it was on the sabbath.
    .
I can see the crowd of worshippers turn as a commotion ensues.  There, before them all, a woman is drug into their prescence. Her clothes rumpled and not proper.   Her face ashen white, frightened.
    .
Perhaps she kept her head down and eyes adverted as she tried in vain to cover her face to hide her shame.
    .
    C A U G H T.
    .
I imagine how violated she must have felt.  Being grabbed by men unknown to her, right in the very act.  Something one does not expect when one is naked and in the throes of illicit passion, in the embrace of a man whom she had trusted enough to let her guard down.  I wonder what had gone through her head.  Total fear.
    .
From a dimly lit bedroom thrust onto the world's stage, drug through the midday sun, past the marketplace, and through the crowded streets, up the many steps of the Temple of the God of Israel.  Still smelling of sexual activity, she was manhandled.  Harlot.  Whore.  Prostitute.  Adulteress.
    .
I wonder if she was trying to support her family.  Perhaps her own husband had left her and she was doing the only job that would afford her a roof over her head.  Maybe this was her first time as an adulteress.  Maybe she was an old pro.
    .
Maybe she once had a good reputation in small town, but something had happened in her life which led her down the slippery, spiralling path of sin and she moved to the big city of Jerusalem where it would be easier to hide among the shadows and forget the pain she had known.
    .
Regardless, she was covered with the sweat of a man who had willingly chose to commit adultery with her.
    .
The "religious" men of the day, the scribes and Pharisees brought her before Y'shua that day.
    .
"Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
Now Moses in the law commmanded us that such should be stoned, but what do you say?"
    .
I love how Y'shua Jesus responded to their inquiry.
    .
He acted  as if He had not  heard them.
    .
Instead of answering the mob, he simply stooped down to the ground and began writing in the sand.
    .
    Writing.  Drawing.  Doodling.  Oblivious.
    .
I think of Him thinking about the circumstances of her life which had brought her to this very act and to His feet in the temple court.  I imagine Him scanning the hearts of everyone in the vicinity.
    .
Like a laser, reading their motives and intent.
    .
Y'shua Jesus knew the hearts of the scribes and pharisees.  He knew the heart of this woman standing before him, perhaps with snot and tears running down her face as she stifled the sobs welling up within her.
    .
He knew the heart of the adulterous man who had also been in the very act  as well,
for it takes two to tango, so-to-speak, and yet obviously he was not CAUGHT.
    .
I wonder why the guilty man was not caught also.
    .
Y'shua Jesus knew.  And so He ignored them.
    .
I love that when Moses brought the stone tablets to the mountaintop, that the very  finger of God wrote  His ten commandments upon them.  Writing is cool.  I dig that YHVH is into writing.
    .
And here, in the temple courtyard, He wrote  with His finger again.
    .
Tracing Hebrew letters upon the very same dirt from which He first formed the first man, Adam.  I imagine Him being right-handed being, pushing and moving the dust with His index finger, aware of the woman and her fear as her heart pounded in her chest.  Around her, the crowd murmuring about her.  In whistpers and taunts, scoffing at her.
    .
Turning their noses up at her.  Speaking ill of her and her kind.  Rumours about her multiplying.  A bit like the game of telephone, the story passed on from one hebrew to another, until it bore no resemblance to the truth anymore.
    .
I want to know what Y'shua Jesus wrote there.  For all to see.
    .
Unshaken.  Stoic.  With such purpose, He simply and merely wrote upon the earth.
    .
The lynch mob continued to assail Him, asking Him over and over about what  should bedone  to her.
    .
    At last, He spoke...
"He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her."
    .
And then, saying His peace, He stooped down again, and wrote on the ground.
    .
The mob stood as His words echoed in their ears.  Most likely this was not what they expected Him to say.  I imagine their brains were temporarily short-circuited by this exchange.  Say what?
    .
    Y'shua Jesus wrote.
    .
Perhaps He wrote His ten commandments which the group of scribes and pharisees read, and when convicted, dropped the stones that they had so greedily picked up, eager to kill this woman for breaking the law and sinning against the Most High God.
    .
Why were they so anxious to stone this particular woman?
    .
Why were they not  so adamant in their desire to stone the other offender, the man who was also caught in the very same act of adultery but not drug before the temple court for all to see?
    .
Sin is sin.  Sin is death.  Deuteronomy 22:22-24
    .
Did the scribes and pharisees have it in for this woman?  Was the man who willingly knew  this woman in the biblical sense, albeit adulterous, an inside-man who set her up?   Perhaps, like they would one day pay Judas to betray the Messiah with a kiss, they had paid this very same adulterous man a good fee from the temple treasury.
    .
    Hmmm.
    .
Things that make you go Hmmmm.
    .
The stones dropped, one by one, beginning with the eldest, until the mob was gone.
    .
    Vanished.
    .
There own sin admitted to in their own hearts.
    .
Each one realizing that they were not  without sin.
That each of them had also broken the law,
for if one breaks the law in any way, he has broken all.
    .
What love, kindness, and compassion Y'shua Jesus has shown this woman and women like her.
    .
Rahab the well-known and prosperous harlot of Jericho obtained mercy from YHVH and was grafted into God's people.  Even marrying and conceiving a son named Boaz who later married the young Moabitess  woman who was the daughter-in-law of Naomi, saying, "Let your people be my people and your God my God."
    .
The mercies of YHVH are new every morning.  So vast is His love.
    .
    So ready to forgive.
    .
So intimate is He with all our sin....
    .
for He felt and experienced them all to the Nth degree..
    .
as He died as a propitiation for our sin upon a tree.
    ,
Cursed before God, his Father YHVH.
    .
    Every sin laid upon Him.
    .
Washed in His atoning blood as the Lamb of God chosen before the foundation of the world.
    .
To the woman caught in adultery,
    He said,
    "Woman, where are your accusers?
    Has no man condemned thee?"
    .
To which she responded, "No man, Lord."
    .
    To which He said,
"Neither do I condemn thee.  Go and sin no more."
    .
I imagine her standing there, tear-stained face.  Still in shock.
    .
The crowd silenced by the display they just witnessed.
    .
I imagine her desire to return home quickly so that she may wash herself clean, removing the horrible reminder of that day from her body, the co-mingled sweat from the illicit union of which she has been a willing participant for whatever reason.
    .
I imagine the exhileration that she also might have felt, knowing that she was not going to be stoned to death and was given a new lease on life by this man some called the Messiah, and others a prophet.
    .
I also imagine that no one in the religious crowd wanted anything to do with her, and so this woman walked home alone.
    .
    Alone.
    .
Pondering all that had transpired that day.
    .
    Step by glorious step.
    .
    ALIVE.
    .
    FORGIVEN.
    .

    Your Self-Esteem

Where does your self-esteem come from?

Does it come from other people - their opinions, their views of you, their comments, and how they treat you?

Does it come from your abilities and what you are able to do?

Does it come from your accomplishments and what you know you are going to accomplish?

Many people have such a low self-esteem, or opinion of themselves.  They do not think very highlly of themeselves; therefore, they do things that are harmful to themselves - like hurt themselves, or overeat or undereat, or speak negatively about themselves, or even live in a lifestyle that is harmful to them.

I too, struggle at times, some days more than others, with my own self-esteem.  But, I have something many do not have. I have the knowledge of knowing that my self-worth does not come from myself.  Instead it comes from God.  God finds me valuable and worth it.  He found me valuable enough to send His only son Jesus to die for my sins. He found me valuable enough to let me hear the message of redemption.  AND, He found me valuable enough to give me a choice between His love for me, or to continue on the path I was on.

He found me valuable, and He still finds me WORTH it!

I have had times when didn't find myself worth it.  I have been guilty of comparing myself to others, thinking that I'm not good enough.  I have thought - well, I'm not pretty enough, or skinny enough, or smart enough, or witty enough, or ..... Anything, in myself, just didn't seem enough.

The great thing is, that there is NOTHING within myself that is enough.  NOTHING.  However, when I said "yes" to His ways and His plan and HIS gift of salvation, I found that my value really wasn't in who I thought I was, but in who GOD thinks I am.

I forget this from time to time, though not as often as I used to do so. I have come a long way, but I take hope that He will continue to remind me of my value to Him, and I don't have to depend on who I think I am.  For truly, within myself, I am just NOT enough.  But HE is!

Col 2:10........... I  am complete in Him who is the head of all principality and power.

2011 Mensa Scholarship Winning Essay by Julie Shematz

On Sunday, June 12th I was awarded a financial scholarship from Mensa, the High IQ Society, for an essay I submitted. I knew it was a long shot to win, but after consulting with my scholastic mentors, I decided to give it a chance. I had no idea what Mensa was and realized the type of organization it was when my husband (who has supported me 110%) displayed a look of concern and doubt when I asked him to read my proposed essay. You can imagine how shocked and surprised we were when I received the call that my essay was picked with 9 others (out of hundreds of submissions) to send to nationals and then when I received the call that my essay was chosen from thousands of entries as a winner!  I ended up being one of four award winning essay winners from the region and the only graduate student recipient.
I would like to publicly thank my husband, Steve Shematz, for his faithful support of my educational and professional endeavors. Additionally, I would like to thank Dr. Richard Maybee for pushing me to accomplish things of which I never thought I was capable and Sherry Lex-Heinrich of Barry University (Financial Aid Advisor) for encouraging me to apply for the scholarship. Of course, I extend my thanks to everyone that has prayed for and supported my healing journey and the development of Beauty From Ashes™ Ministries. Together we have come a long way and I am very excited about the future. Lastly, I want to thank Mensa for the prestigious scholarship award. Below is my winning essay and it was not titled, however, I think it could be appropriately named, "From Pain to Passion: Why I'm Doing What I'm Doing".
I am pursuing a Master of Education degree in the Mental Health Counseling Program from Florida Gulf Coast University as an academic goal in my life.  This degree will provide professional training and credentials to my career goal of providing services to victims of commercialized sexual exploitation and human sex trafficking.
In 2005, I founded the not for profit, public charity, Beauty From Ashes™ (BFA) Ministries, Inc.  We work with victims of commercialized sexual exploitation and trafficking locally and nationally.  Our purpose is to EDUCATE the community, ADVOCATE for victims, implement REACH, RESCUE and RESTORE programs and provide safeHOMES (residential recovery homes).
I am the CEO and oversee all operations of BFA.  Currently, all staff are volunteers.  We meet and assist with victims’ practical needs by providing them and their families with support, life skill development, assistance with education, job placement, relocation, short term and/or residential housing, as well as addiction rehabilitation. We assist individuals in the transition out of and/or away from destructive and emotionally damaging lifestyles by providing guidance and direction for situations brought about by their choices such as substance abuse, pregnancy, occultism, prostitution, abortion, etc. We help them to deal constructively with the consequences their decisions to be involved with this industry and lifestyle have produced.  Teaching them responsibility, character development and how to daily maintain a stable and productive life is our objective.  It is also our purpose to network with and support other organizations dedicated to the same and/or similar goals in assisting individuals and families that desire a healthier lifestyle.
In late 2002, when I was able to break free from the bondages of modern day slavery, I determined in my heart to do something for the countless others I saw hopelessly feeling trapped and abandoned by family and society.  Recognizing that victims are in desperate need of long term, holistic, comprehensive services in order for them to have the opportunity to become over-comers of this social injustice has inspired me to pursue this career goal.  The complexity of the trauma that has occurred in these victims warrants specialized mental health care.  I know from my own experience of being a survivor of human trafficking, what the benefits these, rarely acquired, services served me through out my healing journey.  In my experience of working with survivors over the past five years, as a service and aftercare provider, I have recognized the need for sound counseling, boundaries, program development, and consulting that addresses education and self care of caretakers.  It is my aspiration to also provide these services to assist aftercare workers in equipping them with longevity in serving the victims and survivors.
From my greatest pain has come my most profound and significant mission in life.  My organization’s vision is that domestic victims will be given the opportunity to receive the services they need in order to recover from the trauma and injustices done to them.  My purpose is to acquire a mental health counseling degree and licensure because it will better equip me to accomplish this goal and professionally qualify me to work with this extremely wounded populace.  Achieving this goal will also bring credentials to the organization as it serves the community through education, advocacy and implementation of outreach, prevention, intervention and restoration programs.

VBS Human Trafficking Curriculum, Upcoming Strip Club OutREACH, Breaking Free Support Group & More!

BFA PARTNERS WITH VBS TO EDUCATE CHILDREN ABOUT HUMAN TRAFFICKING: Last week we appealed to our fans, partners and fellow abolitionists to help us come up with a creative way to speak about human trafficking to children ages 3-11 for a local church's Vacation Bible School (VBS) program. The huge challenge was to not use words like human trafficking, sex, abuse, victim, rape, prostitution, stripping, etc.  Our objective was to come up with blurbs to be read every day for VBS's 'Ministry Minute'. The church is having Beauty From Ashes (BFA) be their support ministry for VBS and wants to tell the children everyday about us, what we're doing, why, and ultimately educate the children to prevent them from becoming victims of human sex trafficking.  The response was awesome and we thank everyone that contributed and we want to especially thank Sanibel Community Church for boldly going, to our knowledge, where no other children's program has ever went before.  With the numbers of domestic minors being forced or lured into human sex trafficking an alarming 100,000-300,000 a year and the average age of entry into prostitution being 11-14, they recognized the need to implement preventative educational measures and we applaud them for doing such!  To read the five days of 'Ministry Minutes' for VBS, CLICK HERE.

STRIP CLUB OUTREACH:  This Saturday, June 11th the BFA OutREACH Team will be serving up a home cooked meal and delivering gifts that include Bibles, the Magdelena DVD, inspirational books, beauty and hair supplies, and human trafficking information in the locker room of our local "adopted" strip club.  BFA has been going into this club since 2005 and consistently serving up meals on monthly basis since 2009.  Our objective has been to share the Good News, teach about and demonstrate God's kindness and love, and establish relationships that will extend beyond the outREACH.  In the 1st 6 months of 2011, more women have quit and sought our services than ever before!  Additionally, not only are we able to educate the employees and staff about human trafficking, we are able to keep our eyes open for potential trafficking victims and initiate intervention that leads to restoration.

BREAKING FREE LIFE SKILLS & SUPPORT GROUP:  Wednesdays at Barry University 1-3pm.  For women who are currently in the sex industry and for those who have been in it.   Child care and lunch provided.  Registration required.  Contact Julie Shematz at julie@beautyfromashes.org or call 239-939-9218 to register.

2010 AUDITED FINANCIAL REPORT:  In 2010 92.7% of all giving and income to BFA went to Program Services. Because people believe in our mission and vision, we had approximately 10,600 in kind items given and 5000 hours of services donated.  We don't use our partner's seed money to buy clothing to sell, for elaborately painted vehicles, extensive marketing, or grandiose salaries, we use it to meet the needs of the marginalized population we serve and to advance the kingdom of God.  This audited report demonstrates that BFA is committed to the highest standards of stewardship and financial accountability.  We want to thank our partners for assisting us to Educate the community, Advocate for, Reach, Rescue and Restore victims of commercialized exploitation and human sex trafficking. DONATIONS:  Your partnership is vital for us.  We currently rely on private donations to provide Program Services. Please consider becoming a partner by giving a tax deductible gift today.  For  $25 or more we will send you our  Child of God CD.  For secure online donations, CLICK HERE or mail your check, cash or money order to Beauty From Ashes, 13300 S. Cleveland Ave., Ste, 56-623, Fort Myers, FL 33907.

Finally, I will leave you with this scripture from Acts 20:24, "My life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus-the work of telling others the Good News about God's wonderful kindness & love."

Thank you for supporting me and the work our Lord entrusted to me since 2002.  Together we are fulfilling His mission for those entrapped in slavery.

Teaching About Human Trafficking at VBS

Two weeks ago fellow red headed human trafficking abolitionist and educator, Diana Scimone, spear headed a challenge to other abolitionists asking the perplexing question, "How do we educate the most vulnerable, potential victims of domestic human trafficking, minors, without sanitizing or sensationalizing the subject?"

The Department of Justice released a report in May that revealed that 83% of human trafficking is human sex trafficking. Today it is estimated that between 100,000-300,000 domestic children are being forced into prostitution every year.  These children are OUR CITIZENS, they are being forced into what is considered a SEVERE FORM OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING that is happening HERE in the USA. The average age of entry into prostitution is between 11-14 years old!  The number #1 destination in the world to have sex with children is the USA!  There is a HUGE NEED to educate children and parents how REAL this problem is, that it's happening in EVERY neighborhood, and what they can do to PREVENT it from happening to them.

We followed with Diana's appeal in our E-Newsletter and Blog by presenting our dilemma to develop Vacation Bible School 'Ministry Minute' blurbs for children aged 3 to 11.  The biggest challenge was to do this WITHOUT using words like human trafficking, sex, abuse, rape, victims, etc.  We received many responses via all forms of social networking and appreciate everyone's input and ideas.  Below is what we came up with and we hope that it might inspire you even more in the development of such important educational tools for minors.  We'd love hearing from you as you develop yours as well and to know if this has helped you.

NOTE:  'Ministry Minute' will be read all five days of VBS and a corresponding video with pics and images from Beauty From Ashes outREACHes & ministry work will be shown. The local church sponsoring the event chose Beauty From Ashes as their support ministry and will be asking the children to bring in items for our outREACHes daily.  Items such as beauty supplies, dinner paper products, toiletries, bookmarks, etc. will be given and presented to me at the parent's dinner/final evening.  We'll also have our information table set up to inform parents more about the scope of the problem and what BFA is doing to help.

Here is what we came up with...again keep in mind this is for children ages 3-11:

    DAY ONE:
There are more slaves in the world, the United States, and South Florida than ever before.  Beauty From Ashes is a unique ministry that helps set the slaves in the Fort Myers area free and across the nation. Beauty From Ashes helps freed slaves to heal and understand that God loves them no matter what they do and to become all that God wants them to be.  Because it is strangers that make girls, boys, and women into slaves, Beauty From Ashes wants you to remember to never talk to strangers, especially at these strangers’ most popular places to catch slaves: on the Internet, at the Mall, at Parks, at the Movie Theatre, Schools, Corner Stores, and at Bus Stops.

    DAY TWO:
The Bible says that Jesus came to set the captives free and that we should all be like Jesus. Beauty From Ashes is Jesus’ hands to girls, boys, and women trapped in modern day slavery. Beauty From Ashes helps them to be free and teaches them that God loves and values them no matter what.  Because it is strangers who hurt these girls, boys, and women, Beauty From Ashes wants you to remember to never talk to strangers, especially on the Internet, at the Mall, at Parks, at the Movie Theatre, Schools, Corner Stores, and at Bus Stops.

    DAY THREE:
Beauty From Ashes helps hurting girls, boys, and women in this area and nationally to be freed from slavery and to heal.  Beauty From Ashes shares with hurting and broken girls, boys and women the Good News about God’s wonderful kindness and love. Beauty From Ashes is fulfilling the Great Commission by helping these hurting girls, boys, and women to learn how to be like Jesus. Because strangers are the ones who hurt these girls, boys and women, Beauty From Ashes wants you to remember to never talk to strangers, especially on the Internet, at the Mall, at Parks, at the Movie Theatre, Schools, Corner Stores, and at Bus Stops.

    DAY FOUR:
Beauty From Ashes reaches modern day slaves locally by serving them yummy home cooked meals and giving them special gifts that include the Word of God, beauty and hair supplies, inspirational books, toiletries, and gift items that tell hurting girls, boys, and women that God loves them no matter what, wants to rescue them, and has a good plan for their future. Beauty From Ashes wants you to remember that strangers hurt these girls, boys, and women and wants to protect you. Don't ever talk to strangers, especially on the Internet, at the Mall, at Parks, at the Movie Theatre, Schools, Corner Stores, and at Bus Stops.

    DAY FIVE:
Beauty From Ashes helps slaves to become free and receive the assistance they need to heal and become new creations in Jesus. Beauty From Ashes helps make beauty from ashes in the lives of hurting and broken girls, boys, women, and men in the Fort Myers area. So, to prevent you from becoming a slave, Beauty From Ashes wants you to remember:  Never talk to strangers, especially on the Internet, at the Mall, at Parks, at the Movie Theatre, at School, Corner Stores, and at Bus Stops.
