STRIP CLUB OUTREACH REPORT:  April's Strip Club OutREACH was a success from start to finish! We are thrilled to welcome new volunteers to the gift assembly team as well as the comfort meal preparation team!  A team leader began the outREACH by sharing a devotion on how we can come as we are instead of trying to fix ourselves before surrendering to Christ.  It set the pace for the evening outREACH. Once again we were blessed by Erin Pruett, Co-chair of the Defender Foundation, based out of Jacksonville, joining us. Thanks to our team for their willingness to comfort others with the comfort that was once given them!  We are especially grateful for the openness many women had in sharing their stories of hurt and the hope they allowed us to share with them. We are so blessed to be a part of their lives and we LOVE seeing them take steps to build a life they dream of by committing to counseling. To see pictures of the outREACH CLICK HERE.

RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM PLACEMENT:  One of the services we offer is coordinating residential placement and we are pleased to share that 2 survivors of sex trafficking took a huge step of faith and entered residential recovery programs this month.  Not only do we continue to provide our clients support, but we provide consulting for these programs to assist them in application of effective treatment modalities. Please keep them in prayer as they commit to their healing and restoration process.

BREAKING FREE:  A support and life skills group, Breaking Free, is being held at Grace Church in Fort Myers, on Tuesdays from 7-8:30pm.  If you or someone you know is in need of a safe place to begin working towards freedom from sex work, the adult entertainment industry, or sexual exploitation please CLICK HERE and find out more about this closed women's group.  Confidentiality guaranteed.

Since 2005, Beauty From Ashes has been providing trainings nationally, presenting our unique model of outREACH and afterCARE. Due to the DHS Capacity Building Grant we were able to improve the training significantly. Developed in collaboration with overcomers, our victim/survivor/overcomer centered training modules include:

Beauty From Ashes Structure and Operations Model
Human Trafficking and Sex Trafficking
Who are the Victims?
Bias and Prejudice
Mental Health Challenges
Strip Club/Sex Industry OutREACH
Building Your Team
AfterCARE
Community Engagement
Public Information
Common Issues of Sex Workers and Boundaries
Mentoring
Self-care
Health Care Workers
The Traffickers and Facilitators

Additionally, our founder, Julie Shematz, transitioning into her final year at  at Florida Gulf Coast University in the mental health counseling Master's program, just completed a research paper and presentation on Females in Sex Trafficking: Drug Dependence and Treatment.   We'll be adding this to our training curriculum and individualized presentations.  Here is the abstract of the paper:

This paper explores the framework of females involved in sex trafficking and how drug dependency is used in recruitment and control, the prevalence of co-occurring disorders and addictions, and effective treatment modalities.  The devastating impacts on females who have been forced to prostitute and repeatedly sexually traumatized are profound.  Treatment, in order to be effective, needs to address drug dependency and co-occurring disorders, client’s strengths, and be from a holistic perspective.  Community collaboration is essential to meeting the complex needs of victims.  In order to combat this national crisis, the field of psychology, health care, service providers, legal professionals, law enforcement, and community leaders need to work collectively to identify victims and provide them with the critical, comprehensive and seamless recovery services of which they are in desperate need.
PAST EVENTS:  On March 23rd on Sanibel Island, Florida, Julie spoke at Sanibel Community Church's annual mission's conference and the team participated in events throughout the week.  Community members were educated about sex trafficking and the BFA team was encouraged and blessed throughout the entire conference.  CLICK HERE for pictures of the event.  Julie also shared her testimony in Fort Myers, Florida, at the Pure Passion event, sponsored by Awaken Ministries.  Awareness was raised, relationships built, and committed volunteers stepped up to join the BFA FREEdom™ Team.  One attendee was able to put her newfound knowledge to use just days after the event.  She witnessed suspicious activity at her child's bus stop and was able to intervene in the life of a teenage girl!  Like our founder always says "awareness leads to prevention, intervention, and restoration." Additionally, we partnered with FGCU's police department and presented a workshop for college students at FGCU on Sex Trafficking: Romance, Red Flags & Self Defense.

UPCOMING AWARENESS/EDUCATION EVENTS:  Nurses play a crucial role in combating human trafficking as they are at the front line for identifying victims who seek medical attention.  It is critical that nurses and others in the health care profession become trained regarding the warning signs.   For this reason we are elated to announce that Julie will be presenting at the South West Florida Nurses Association on May 21st in Naples, Florida. Other events in the month of May include Lifeline Family Center, a local program for teenage mothers, where we will be presenting on Staying Safe from Sexual Exploitation. Additionally, we will again be participating in a documentary on sex trafficking. This time in collaboration with Miami University. For a complete schedule of events,

My Internship Experience at Beauty From Ashes™

I did not know what to expect when I was accepted as a college intern with Beauty From Ashes.  I was excited and nervous all at the same time since I had never interned anywhere before. At the time I was accepted, I had already been an active volunteer with the ministry for about 3 months. I loved volunteering, but knew I wanted to become even more involved- that is why I created the first fundraiser- the FGCU Freedom Project. I began this fundraiser in September 2011 and it continued to November. Christa and Julie, our program manager and founder, respectively, along with my Student Abolitionist Movement club members, helped me to put on a very successful tabling event, film night, and dinner banquet. This fundraiser raised not only money, but a great deal of awareness for BFA and human sex trafficking. At the end of November I applied for the BFA internship, which I began in January 2012.

Due to the fact that I was the first “official” college intern to be accepted, I was put in charge of creating an internship application package to be used in the recruitment of future interns. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of creating this internship program- I knew I would love creating and organizing the different documents, and also talking to friends and classmates in order to try to recruit more interns. Thankfully this recruitment worked and about a week after I began interning Eslande and Michelle came on board!!

Eslande, Michelle, and I were given different responsibilities every week to be completed both inside and outside of the office; the fact that the responsibilities changed weekly was important to me because I felt like I learned something new and valuable every time I came to the office. Some of my duties included: helping Julie and Christa facilitate the National Sex Industry OutREACH & AfterCARE Training; participating in weekly Strip Club Outreach Gift Assemblies, filing documents and organizing the filing system; creating Microsoft Office Word and Excel documents; updating the referral database; and performing various other administrative tasks. I was also given the opportunity to attend the Sanibel Community Church’s Mission Social with Christa and one of our volunteers, Kaylee, as well as table for the student-led “Eagles Against Modern Slavery” event held at FGCU last month.

I can honestly say I have learned so many valuable lessons and have obtained a great variety of important skills from interning at Beauty From Ashes. Before beginning my internship, I had no clue how to use a Mac computer and had never made important phone calls to non-profit agencies. I did not have very good time management skills, either. Julie and Christa taught me how to run a non-profit- from the paperwork to the counseling of clients. They were patient and understanding and I could tell they really wanted me to succeed at whatever I was trying to accomplish. They taught me the importance of sticking to one’s word and never giving up hope. I also learned more about sex trafficking than I could ever have imagined. I am so very grateful for the opportunity I was given at Beauty From Ashes and know that I will always remember this experience as one of my favorites.

Katie is currently an undergraduate student at FGCU. She will be graduating on April 29, 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a Minor in Interdisciplinary Studies. She will begin her Master of Social Work program in August 2012. She enjoys reading, volunteering, and horse-back riding. She was born and raised in Coral Springs, FL, but currently resides in Fort Myers.

Mission's Conference at Sanibel Community Church

I attended a great event a few weeks ago for Beauty From Ashes. The event took place at the Sanibel Community Church on March 25, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. It was a great location on a beautiful Sunday morning. There were about 25 to 30 other organizations bringing awareness to the people of Sanibel. During the service that took place before the ministry fair Grace Burnham, a missionary, spoke about her testimony of traveling with her husband to the Philippines and being captured by Abu Sayyaf. Abu Sayyaf is a terrorist group who had ties to Osama Bin Laden.

I sat and met some great people that care so much about the crimes that our happening around us, including the horrid crimes and actions with sex trafficking. Sanibel Community Church was very grateful to Beauty From Ashes (BFA) for being there. BFA is making a difference every day and being the only survivor-led nonprofit organization in Florida bringing awareness about sex is such an amazing thing.

This will be my last blog writing for Beauty From Ashes due to the fact that I will be graduating from Florida Gulf Coast University April 29, 2012 and moving back home to Miami, Florida. I have had such an amazing experience volunteering for BFA and I have learned so much. They are a great organization to be a part of and I will take them with me everywhere I go.  For more information on how you can get involved CLICK HERE.

Thank you Gabby Diaz, for partnering with Beauty From Ashes throughout your last semester in college.  You have been a blessing to our organization!  -Christa Hicks, Program Manager

April Prayer Alert

Dear Faithful Intercessors,

Thank you for your continued commitment to intercede for Beauty From Ashes™ Ministries.  Your prayers are crucial to us and those we serve. Know that the staff, interns, volunteers, and those we serve feel your prayers in a mighty way.

CLIENTS:  Pray diligently for those we serve. Pray they feel the love of Christ as they begin their healing journey. Pray they recognize the love and support surrounding them, and that they begin to trust in the people assisting them. May God give them a vision and hope for the future and that they are able to remain focused on that hope throughout their journey to new life. Above all, pray they become aware of their unique talents and gifts, that they realize their full potential in life, and their names be written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

OUTREACHES:  Please pray for us as we begin expanding out outREACHes into new areas. Pray that God would open the hearts of people in the areas we are currently reaching out to, as well as the new areas we are entering. Pray God continues to build our outREACH team with committed servants who are ready and willing to show a nonjudgmental love as they share the hope found in a relationship with Jesus Christ.

SUPPORT & LIFE SKILLS GROUP:  Pray for those attending our relocated, weekly, support and life skills group, Breaking Free.  Thank God with us for a partnership with Grace Church, of central Fort Myers, who have opened their hearts and doors to us.  Located in the same area we have been planning new  outREACH strategies, may those who are in this area and others,  attend this closed, Master's level clinician/overcomer, run group. Agree with us that those attending will commit to the journey of healing and recovery and that everyone that is supposed to be there will be. Pray that a spirit of unity and harmony will reign in the meetings and healthy support systems will be established and sustained.

ASSESSMENT/RESOURCE CENTER:  We are still praising God for our assessment/resource center and it is daily a very busy, busy place for staff, volunteers and clients. Being able to provide comprehensive, integrated and multidisciplinary services to our clients is vital to their well being. Pray for the staff of the United Way House, the Salvation Army and Lee Physician's Health Care as they partner with us in the delivery of services.

STAFF: Please pray for God to bring us an administrative assistant/secretary who is ready and able to hit the ground running. We are seeking an individual desiring to make a career with Beauty From Ashes and someone that is willing to grow with us.  Agree with us for the ideal person to know who they are and they stand out to us beyond a shadow of a doubt.  We KNOW God is faithful and has the right person in mind.

Please keep our Founder and Executive Director, Julie Shematz, in your prayers as she enters into her final three weeks of the semester.  May she be able to get all the assignments completed, quizzes, papers, reports, and exams completed with a standard of excellence while maintaining balance.  Pray for our Program Manager, Christa Hicks, as she balances her very full plate managing the programs, clients, interns, and volunteers of BFA.  Agree with us that she be refreshed daily and that both ladies and their families be protected.

VOLUNTEERS and INTERNS: Thank God for sending more committed volunteers and that we have a Gift Assembly Coordinator! Praise God for the work He has done in and through our spring college interns. Many groups and individuals grew in awareness and concern for victims of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation, through the events our volunteers and interns participated in these past few months. Their efforts in prevention were greatly received and we witnessed girls, adolescence, and young woman take action to protect themselves and their friends. Most significantly, our clients were blessed beyond measure by the behind the scenes labor they so graciously provided us during the semester. Julie and Christa were also blessed mightily, as the interns shared their experiences of how the internship impacted their lives. Please pray for each of the interns as they transition into the next phase of their education and lives. Two of them have applied to graduate school, which is an answer to our prayers to raise up new committed professionals with a passion to serve hurting individuals locally and nationally.  All three have committed to continuing on as volunteers with BFA.  Pray for us as we enlist new college interns, locally and from across the state and nation, for the summer and fall. Pray that the new interns will begin their internship with an abundance of energy, commitment, and be able to hit the ground running!

LONG TERM RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM:  Pray for God's direction, provision, staff, volunteers, and community engagement for existing programs and His perfect timing for ours. Pray that He continue to guide us, and give us wisdom as we continue in the planning phase. Thank God for the partnerships we have with existing and developing programs.  May the best recovery practices be provided to survivors as they become over-comers.

EVENTS: Praise God for His guidance throughout the past few months, as they were filled with awareness & prevention events. As we move forward into the spring season, agree with us for wisdom and discernment in knowing which events we are to participate in and which we are to not be involved with.

FUND RAISING: Pray for our financial partners.  May their giving be returned to them with a 100 fold blessing! Pray for new partners and creative fund raising ideas.  Thank God with us for sending in the resources from the North, South, East, and West.

PARTNERSHIPS:  Pray that God would continue to align us with the professional, governmental, private, corporate and faith based partnerships that are of His perfect will and nothing less.  Agree with us that these relationships be protected and that our partners are blessed abundantly. Thank Him for churches that are partnering with BFA and supporting us as missionaries.  May God continue to lay on the hearts of pastors and parishioners a burden to raise awareness and support the work of BFA.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND ADVISORS:  Agree with us for God to provide health, protection, wisdom, encouragement, and divine direction for BFA.  Pray for those that are struggling with health issues.  Stand with us in agreement that no weapon formed against them will prosper and by His stripes they are healed.

OTHER LIKE MINISTRIES/AGENCIES:  Pray for humbleness and wisdom for all agencies, organizations, and ministries and a desire for unity in helping victims become overcomers.  May the level of professionalism and ethical concern for victims be raised and licensed counselors and professional service providers unite with them to provide restoration services and program development.  Pray for balance, biblical priorities, and protection of marriages and families.  May strong boundaries be established and maintained for aftercare providers.  May God's strength and encouragement be imparted to all in the name of Jesus.

FRIDAY PRAYER:  Join us in the spirit every Friday from 8-9am EST to intercede for the victims of commercialized sexual exploitation and sex slavery, as well as the agencies servicing them.  CLICK HERE for Prayer Guide.
